WHY WALK WITH US

A small group, hosted end to end.

We walk together as a small group and make sure everyone gets the most out of the forest, from the paperwork to the last plate of lunch.

15 guests, never more

Small enough that everyone knows everyone's name by dinner.

A host, start to finish

Veera or Yatheesh from Be The Locals walks every step with you, alongside the forest department guides.

Know the forest

An evening session on the valley's history, wildlife, plants and the tribal communities who live here.

Permits handled

Silent Valley entry needs forest department approval. Send us your Aadhaar and we take care of it.

WHY SILENT VALLEY

A forest that people saved.

In the 1970s, a dam was planned that would have drowned this valley. Scientists, writers and ordinary people pushed back in the "Save Silent Valley" movement, and won. The valley became a national park instead.

Today it is part of the Western Ghats UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the lion-tailed macaque. Locals say it is called silent because you rarely hear cicadas here. Come and listen for yourself.

ITINERARY

Your 2 days in Silent Valley.

DAY 1 · 17 NOV Into the Valley
MORNING

Breakfast and roll out

Fuel up and meet your trek mates. Then the forest department vehicle takes us deep into the rainforest.

LATE MORNING

Sairandhri trail and Kunthipuzha

A short guided walk ends at the Kunthipuzha, a river so clear you can count the pebbles on its bed. We climb the watch tower for a sweeping view over the canopy and the Nilgiri ranges. Keep your eyes open for lion-tailed macaques.

MIDDAY

The museum: a forest people saved

The story of the "Save Silent Valley" movement, when a dam nearly drowned this forest, told where it happened.

AFTERNOON

River time at Panthanthod

Back at the dormitory, slow down. Take a dip in the cool river, lie on a rock, do nothing. This is the part most people forget they needed.

EVENING · THE HEART OF THIS TREK

The Silent Valley Session

Why is this valley silent? Who has lived in these forests for generations? Which plants and animals exist nowhere else on earth? This session is why Be The Locals started this community trek. You leave knowing the forest, not just having walked through it.

NIGHT

Stories and stars

Dinner, conversations with people who were strangers that morning, and an early night. The forest wakes early, and so do we.

DAY 2 · 18 NOV The Deep Forest
EARLY MORNING

The 14 km rainforest trek

The main event. We walk into the deep forest as it wakes up, crossing streams and rivers and passing through rare shola forests, the high-altitude woodland the Western Ghats are famous for. Expect mist, birdsong, wet feet and moments of complete silence.

AFTERNOON

Hot lunch, well earned

A hot meal waits for us back at Panthanthod. No lunch tastes better than the one after 14 km.

WRAP UP

Back to Mukkali

The vehicle drops us back at the Information Centre, Mukkali. You carry home tired legs, new friends and a forest you'll keep talking about.

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

How far is Silent Valley from Coimbatore?

Silent Valley's entry point at Mukkali is reached from Coimbatore through Anaikatti and Attappadi. We leave Gandhipuram bus stand at 4:50 AM on the government bus to Attappadi and reach Mukkali in the morning.

Do I need a permit to enter Silent Valley National Park?

Yes. Entry is controlled by the Kerala Forest Department. We arrange the permits and approvals for every guest using the Aadhaar details you share after booking.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancel 30 days or more before the trek for a full refund minus ₹500. Within 30 days of the trek, or for a no-show, there is no refund. You can change your batch once for free up to 7 days before, if seats are open.

Can't I just go to Silent Valley on my own?

You can do the short day trip. The overnight stay and the 14 km deep forest trek need forest department approval for a group. We arrange that, plus the session, food and hosts.

How do I pay?

Pay ₹1,000 advance to block your seat. The balance of ₹3,499 is due 30 days before the trek. We share payment details on WhatsApp.

Why ₹4,499?

₹4,499 covers forest permits, the forest department programme and guides, the dormitory stay, meals and on-ground costs for a group of up to 15.

Will we see wild animals?

Maybe. Lion-tailed macaques, Malabar giant squirrels and many birds are often seen. Bigger animals live here too, but nothing is guaranteed in a rainforest.

Is the food vegetarian?

Yes. All meals are vegetarian, cooked Attappadi style: simple, local and fresh, the way people in these hills eat every day.

What if it rains?

The rainforest is at its best in light rain, so we walk. If the forest department closes a trail for safety, we follow their call and tell you right away.

Are men and women in separate rooms?

Yes. Men and women stay in separate dormitories. It is a basic, clean forest dormitory in the middle of the jungle, not a resort.
